When my clients come to me and tell me their website has been hacked (which has happened quite a few times in these past few months) the first thing I ask them is, “Have you updated WordPress and your plug-ins?”
In order to keep your website safe from attacks, it is vitally important that you always have the most updated version of WordPress. WordPress is an amazing platform but, like anything that is so popular, it is constantly the target of hackers.
Here’s why it’s so important:
Installing updates and plug-ins not only increases security and fixes bugs, but it also adds features and functionality that makes using your platform a more enjoyable experience. When a new update is released, the release notes mention what the update is fixing. Hackers often read those notes, and then exploit those vulnerabilities in un-updated versions.

Update your plug-ins, too, as they are even more vulnerable to security breaches than outdated versions of WordPress. You can easily update them in the plug-ins panel by clicking “update available” and acting in bulk, or clicking on each individually.
Thinking about WordPress and its plug-ins is like thinking about any other software; just like you need to update your operating system on your smartphone or tablet, or update your apps, you need to update your version of WordPress.
And don’t forget to backup your files and databases before you update anything, as both are vital! If something goes wrong you cans use your backup files to re-install your site.
